No one knows what happened that morning at River Point. Five boys went hunting. Four came back. The boys won’t say who fired the shot that killed their friend; the evidence shows it could have been any one of them.
Kate Marino’s senior year internship at the District Attorney’s Office isn’t exactly glamorous—more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen. The River Point Boys are all anyone can talk about. Despite their damning toxicology reports the morning of the accident, the DA wants the boys’ case swept under the rug. He owes his political office to their powerful families.
Kate won’t let that happen. Digging up secrets without revealing her own is a dangerous line to walk; Kate has her own reasons for seeking justice for Grant. As she and Stone investigate—the ageing prosecutor relying on Kate to see and hear what he cannot—she realizes that nothing about the case—or the boys—is what it seems. Grant wasn’t who she thought he was, and neither is Stone’s prime suspect. As Kate gets dangerously close to the truth, it becomes clear that the early morning accident might not have been an accident at all—and if Kate doesn’t uncover the true killer, more than one life could be on the line…including her own.
I have been dying for this book ever since I read the summary months ago. We all know that I’m a sucker for a good thriller so it should come as no surprise that I snagged this book as soon as I could. I had actually preordered it from Amazon but for some reason it was delayed and then when I got my November MyBookBox, it was the signed YA pick and I was so excited.
I think my favorite aspect of this book was that it was narrated by our MC, Kate, as well as the one of the River Point Boys. I think this added so much extra to the story.
Kate was very easy for me to connect to. I feel like we were similar in some ways, like me, she pushes and doesn’t give up until she learns the truth. I don’t know if I would have been brave enough to go as far as she did to learn the truth but it’s definitely something that I admire.
I also loved many of the side characters and how they were portrayed. I loved the relationship between Kate and her best friend, Raegan. It isn’t very often that we get to see a true, honest and loyal best friend in books.
The River Point Boys were also well developed and I couldn’t get enough of them. Despite the public appearance, they were flawed and it only took Kate looking closely to realize this. Like Kate, I tried to scrutinize their every more so I could put together the pieces of what happened and who was behind the gun.
This is one of those thrillers where I have no freaking clue who the bad guy is, which doesn’t happen very often. Ever time I had a suspicion, it was quickly shot down and my attention was diverted to another suspect. I won’t go into any more details but I will say that when everything was revealed, I was shocked because I didn’t see it coming.
This is Our Story is a intriguing and thrilling mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
