ARC Review: Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett

Obviously, being *the biggest* Jenn Bennett fangirl, I was ecstatic when Simon & Schuster approved me for the e-ARC of her newest release, Serious Moonlight. And while Serious Moonlight is probably my least favorite Bennett book so far, I still had a fun reading experience! In this book, we follow 18-year-old Birdie Lindberg, who has scored a summer job working the graveyard shift at a swanky hotel in downtown Seattle. However, when she shows up to her first night of work, she realizes one of her coworkers is a boy she had a one-night stand with and promptly ran out on. NIGHTMARE FUEL. That being said, Birdie and Daniel decide to team up to investigate a mystery happening at the […]

ARC Review: A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti

ARC Review: A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti

Content warnings: intimacy, stalking, grief, PTSD, depression, gun violence, murder, death of loved ones, self-harm by way of pushing past physical boundaries As a voracious reader, I’ve read many stories over the course of my lifetime that have resonated with me deeply. But books like A Heart in a Body in the World, books that strike you in your very soul— those are much fewer and far between. This book contains one of the most important stories I’ve ever read. In A Heart in a Body in the World, we follow a runner named Annabelle who, after undergoing a terrible tragedy, decides to run from her home city of Seattle, WA across the country to Washington, DC. It’s a story about grief, […]

ARC Review: Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman

ARC Review: Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Content warnings: car accident, death of a loved one, grief, depression Akemi Dawn Bowman’s debut, Starfish, was one of my favorite debuts of 2017. So, naturally, I knew I had to pick up her follow-up, Summer Bird Blue (even though I knew going in that this book would probably destroy me, and guess what? IT SURE DID). Summer Bird Blue is a poignant story about grief and processing the loss of someone you always expected to be around. It discusses sibling relationships, the healing power of music, and questioning your identity, all set against the vibrant backdrop of a summer in Hawaii. This book follows Rumi, our main character, over the course of a summer as she’s sent to live […]

ARC Review: From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon

ARC Review: From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon

After loving Sandhya Menon’s debut, When Dimple Met Rishi, last year, I knew I would continue to pick up new releases from her. From Twinkle, With Love follows an Indian-American teenager, Twinkle, who dreams of becoming a filmmaker and telling her stories through films. One unique element of this book is that it’s told through an epistolary format, specifically through Twinkle’s diary entries. Twinkle uses her diary to write to female filmmakers who inspire her. I thought this format worked well for the story! It really allowed the reader to get inside Twinkle’s head– which, can I just say, was a refreshingly realistic teenage mind. Twinkle isn’t perfect; she makes mistakes and hurts the people she loves and sometimes struggles […]

ARC Review: Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

ARC Review: Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

After reading and falling in love with both of Jenn Bennett’s previous releases in 2017, I had high hopes for Starry Eyes. And, boy, did it deliver. I stand by my assertion that Bennett knows how to write the PERFECT YA romance. This was the friends-to-enemies-to-lovers camping romance I didn’t know I needed. One of the things I appreciate most about all of Bennett’s protagonists is how passionate they are about specific, quirky interests. But, like, in a totally genuine, non-manic-pixie-dreamgirl way. Zorie, an aspiring astrophysicist, is no exception. I always love YA girl protagonists who are driven and have a clear vision of their futures. I recognize this isn’t reality for everyone, but that was totally me when I was […]

ARC Review: American Panda by Gloria Chao

ARC Review: American Panda by Gloria Chao

American Panda made tons of people’s lists of most-anticipated 2018 book releases, and with good reason. Though this wasn’t my perfect contemporary, it was a solid middle-of-the-road read for me, and I think so many readers will be able to see themselves in the pages of this book.  The thing that stands out most to me about American Panda is how clear it is that this story came straight from Gloria Chao’s heart. You can just feel it in every word she writes. This is a huge reason I enjoy reading #ownvoices books so much, and this one was no exception. Our main character, Mei, is Taiwanese-American, and though I can’t speak directly to the quality of the representation as […]

Review: Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Review: Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman

I received this book as part of Miss Print’s ARC Adoption program. Thanks! Content warnings: abusive parent, sexual assault, anxiety, suicide, racism (challenged on the page) I didn’t hear about Starfish until after it was published, but so many of my friends gave it rave reviews (Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads wrote a particularly great one!) that I knew I had to give it a try. And, guys, I’m so happy I did. I think this book provides representation that’s desperately needed in YA fiction, and it explores some incredibly tough topics in a thoughtful, thorough way. I really think Starfish is a book any reader of YA contemporary will love. Starfish follows our main character, Kiko, after she is denied […]
