Break from Books: Madalyn’s Recent Beauty Favorites

Hey, everyone! Today, I’m bringing you a decidedly non-bookish post. I was thinking about blogging recently, and I realized I don’t post nearly enough about the non-bookish things I enjoy. In fact, aside from the occasional passing comment in a weekly or monthly rewind, I rarely talk about my other hobbies at all. So, I’m introducing a new feature, Break from Books, where I’ll occasionally post about one of my other loves from outside the bookish realm (probably travel, makeup/beauty, or music/podcasts). If you have any requests for posts having to do with any of these topics, let me know!

As far as beauty goes, many of you probably don’t know this, but I worked in a cosmetics studio for over two years. I’m not a working artist anymore, but makeup and skincare are still huge loves of mine, and I’m constantly trying new products. Today, I’ll be sharing some products that I’ve been absolutely loving lately!

Super Sensitive Skin Soap from Amelia Bath & Body // This was recommended to me when I asked for recommendations for new facial cleansers on Twitter, and I am absolutely in love with this soap. I have very sensitive, dry skin that is prone to rosacea but rarely breaks out, and this cleanser is the perfect gentle soap for every day. I keep one bar in the shower and one by my sink. Plus, I had a WONDERFUL experience ordering from Amelia; I can tell she really cares about her customers and puts her heart into each order! (Plus, her prices are soooo reasonable.) I’ve also tested out her Dry Skin Soap, which I am enjoying, as well.

Molton Brown Bath & Shower Gels // If there’s one thing I love, it’s a luxury bath/shower experience. That might sound frivolous to many, but seriously, it’s one of my go-to forms of self-care. My dad has used Molton Brown products since I can remember, and he always drags me to their stores every time we visit Europe (their products are hard to find and more expensive in the US). However, I didn’t personally get into the brand until the past couple years. Let me tell you guys, these shower gels are the best on the market. I LOVE using them for showers as well as for bubble baths. I was recently in Northern Ireland and replenished my supply. I bought my two all-time favorite scents– Pink Pepperpod (spicy, fruity, great for morning showers) and White Sandalwood (floral, comforting, great for nighttime baths)– and also picked up Rhubarb & Rose (floral, sweet, tangy), a new-to-me scent that I am loving. I also got a free sample of Orange & Bergamot (citrusy, musky), which is the perfect size to take on my travels!

Pixi Glow Mist // As mentioned before, I have super dry skin, and this product has changed the game for me, tbh. It’s so multipurpose! I use it before I put on my moisturizer to add a little extra hydration to my skin, and I spray it all over my face after I do my makeup and before I do my setting spray to give my skin some glowy goodness. Plus, I use it throughout the day to refresh my makeup. It was also a lifesaver during my travels this month– it saved my skin from the dry airplane air. Basically, it’s an affordable dupe for the Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist, and I adore the way it makes my skin look both with and without makeup.

Colourpop Eyebrow Pencil in Bangin’ Brunette // I’ve gotten so many compliments on my brows since I started using this particular pencil! The tip is the perfect width to mimic actual eyebrow hairs, but also precise enough for me to draw clean lines to define my (nonexistent) arch. Love it, and you can’t beat the price.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Prismatic Amethyst // The Becca SSPs are my favorite highlighter formulation ever (I own three separate shades), and I bought this limited edition amethyst color as soon as it came out. It’s the perfect wearable lavender highlight (although it pulls more pink than purple), and as someone with incredibly fair skin, it’s the perfect way to incorporate the colored highlighter trend into my makeup routine without it looking too dark or too over-the-top. Plus, the limited-edition packaging is stunning!

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Budapest // I think NYX makes awesome lip products in general, and their soft matte lip creams have been one of my favorite formulas for years. They’re more of a demi-matte than a full-on matte finish, and they’re so comfortable on the lips! I purchased this particular shade when I visited the NYX flagship store in NYC, and it’s so beautiful! It’s kind of a mauve-y red– the perfect subtle pop of color.

Kat von D Lock-It Makeup Setting Mist // This was recommended to me by a Sephora employee when I was looking for a new setting spray, and boy, does it make my makeup last. It also has a super *~luxurious~* mister (sounds weird, but you know what I mean if you love makeup okay), comes with a ton of product, and smells like cucumbers. Plus, it doesn’t dry my skin out or have too much of a matte finish. Basically, it’s an all-around winner.

Have you tried any of these products, or do you plan to? What beauty items are you loving right now? Would you guys be interested in seeing more makeup- and skincare-related posts in the future?

    • Right?! I have only gotten lip products from Colourpop so far but I love them! My faves are my Satin lip Calypso, which is a nice shade of subdued pink -nude according to the site-, and a matte one called Mama. I’m currently waiting for my order of one similar to Mama -a bright terracota shade- but in satin lip, aaand their Double Play highlighter/blush

  1. I need to pay more attention to my skin care! I’m more partial to the eye zone though and went crazy a few months ago and got the Modern Renaissance eyeshadow palette from Anastasia Beverly Hills. I’m in love. It seems like you just can’t go wrong with the colors because all of them look so good!

    • I love skincare! And oh my gosh, the Modern Renaissance palette is my absolute favorite. I haven’t worn eyeshadow much this summer, but I used it pretty much every day this past winter and spring. I especially love the pinks and reds in that palette, but all the colors are such amazing quality! A must-have for sure.

I love when bloggers take a break from bookish related posts- especially for beauty related ones! (Beauty blogs are the only other type of blogs I really follow!) I LOVE makeup, I have waaaaay too much for someone who is not involved in it as a job in any way, haha. However, I am not surprised to learn that you worked in a cosmetics studio, as your makeup always looks amazing!
