Bee Chats About Her Writerly Project

Posted June 24, 2017 by Bee || 1 Comment

Today I’m linking up with the awesome Beautiful People link-up, hosted by the fabulous Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up and Further to talk about my current writing project. I’ve got more than just this, of course, but I’ll share more about those in the future. So first, I’m gonna share a bit more about this project and then I’ll answer the questions!

Staring at the Sun

Genre: YA Contemporary

Topics: Abuse, bullying, alcoholism, grief, self-harm, Borderline Personality Disorder, Pansexuality, friendship, romance,…

What is it about?

Ben is a very troubled seventeen-year-old boy who deals with severe abuse and bullying on a daily basis. He suspects there is more going on in his head, but would rather get drunk every day than deal with any of his problems. Underneath his problems, though, Ben is ridiculously talented and obsessed with helping people and has lost many people in the process. That’s how he meets Micah, someone that promises to help him for a change and tosses his life upside down. But the question is… Will Ben’s troubles stand in the way of what might grow between them?

Sadness, heartbreak and a cute, gay romance is my aesthetic, really.

The Questions

Since my fairy tale retellings and their characters are still in early developement, I’m just going to answer these questions for Ben from Staring at the Sun. But I will feature the others in the coming months, promise!

Ben is my baby and I adore him, really. Dylan O’Brien is the actor/model I use for him and he’s perfect. OH and fun fact, Ben has two dogs. They’re papillon dogs and they’re named Gansey and Manchee (yes, after the book characters.) Now on to the questions!

– What’s their favourite place they’ve ever visited?

Ben is half Scottish, half Irish and used to visit his family in Inverness every summer when he was little. He loved visiting the Loch Ness Lake.

– What’s one mistake they made that they learned from?

Oh dear… Ben hasn’t really learned anything good from his mistakes yet. He’s a tragic, poor baby. The only thing he did learn is that nobody can be trusted and that everyone leaves. He needs cuddles, really.

– What was their favourite subject in school? Or favourite thing to learn about?

Ben’s biggest love and passion is music. Guitar and piano in particular.

– What’s their favourite flower/growing thing?

Ben secretly loves mint and eucalyptus and has a tiny plant in his room from each on his windowsill.

– Have they ever made someone cry? What happened?

Ehm… technically only once? He once punched a guy in the nose so hard it broke and that made the guy cry?? To be fair, he totally deserved it.

– Would you consider them a reliable or unreliable narrator?

Somewhere in between, I think. Not always reliable, but not completely unreliable either.

– What do they dream about at night?

Ben always has horrible nightmares wherein the people he’s lost come back to haunt him and blame him for their deaths.

– They’ve gone out for a “special meal.” What would they eat?

Beignets and pizza. For sure. Give him those and he’s happy like a kid on Christmas morning.

– What’s at least one thing they want to do before they die?

Go to the theatre or a concert. Or… be happy.

– Do they have any distinguishing or unique talents?

YES. Even though he’s very troubled and has LOTS of issues, Ben is stupidly talented. He’s an amazing musician on piano as well as guitar and can basically play a song nearly perfectly after only hearing it once or reading the sheetmusic once. He’s also a very skilled artist and loves drawing or painting with watercolor paint.

What do you think? Would you read this book? Do you have any writing projects you want to flail about? Tell me all about it in the comments!
